Last year when I was helping my parents with their tax business we attempted a marketing strategy. We printed coupons for tax returns on post-it note pads. They were sharp. The idea was for them to get posted on car windows in parking lots. We ordered 12,500 notes, or 500 individual pads. Unfortunately I only had time to utilize 1200-1500 notes… so they have a lot for next year. They got 4 or 5 clients from the notes I distributed which easily paid for the $200 expense for the pads. I kept this information stored away for when I would need it again.

We’re launching a campaign in our church next month that every area of our church will be engaged in. I’ll talk more about that next week. For one of the ways we’re going to experience this church-wide even with the kids requires these sticky notes. So I ordered 500 pads yesterday. They take 5 working days to print and since they’re located only about 80 miles form here, we should get have them in house just a day or two later.

So for a little over $200 I am getting 500 note pads (with 25 individual notes each). The pads I ordered are 4″x3″ pads with full color printing. I’ve only done a graphical layout for these note pads but I’ve been very, very impressed with the quality of the product. Here is what our sticky notes look like:

Now that I’ve made it a point to actually blog about Algerian, I’m amazed about how much more often I just happen to run into it. The day after I started this themed post, I went to dinner with my wife and my summer intern. We had a coupon for this local pizza parlor called Rome’s Pizza. It was a nice little place although their brand and image was a little confusing. On the door was was their logo, an image of the coliseum with Rome’s Pizza spelled out in a circular manner in “papyrus” font. (Papyrus is another overused font… big time. Of the overused fonts, I probably like it the most since it has a some character, but the fact that it’s so overused usually keeps me away from it most of the time. However, I guarantee that if someone’s doing any kind of ancient or Egyptian theme, there is a 68% chance they’re going to use Papyrus.)

So when I walk in I notice something different. The staff t-shirts were just “Rome’s Pizza” written out in Algerian. Why not papyrus? ;)

About six weeks ago I went to an office furniture store to purchase some school lockers. As I was walking into the store, I noticed this sign on the door. I was with my staff that knew about my "thing" with Algerian. I usually laugh to myself when I see it in the wild, but it’s more fun to share with others.

A month or so after getting to Gateway, I found this sign posted in one of our tech booths. Just a few days earlier I told my intern about my distaste for this font. He cracked up when he noticed me finding this sign. Unfortunately, now a few of my staff like to make PowerPoint slides or documents for me to review with this font plastered all over it.

Just after Sara and I moved to Austin I saw this sign. We were living in the hotel at the time and we stopped at this gas station to get a soft drink. I was sitting in the car and noticed this sign. Notice the "skydancer" sign on the bottom, one over from the right. It may be a little hard to see, but I can spot the Algerian "A" from a mile away. Yes Skydancer, as long as you use Algerian, I’ll never buy your product… but since I don’t smoke I probably won’t buy your product anyway.

Several of my friends have a recurring theme day for their blog. My friend Sam has YouTube Friday. Matt has a bunch of theme days like Ministry Monday’s, Two Minute Tuesdays and Sign Wednesdays. I’ve never had one of these because I’m avoiding that kind of commitment. Sad, I know.

So, I’m starting a theme day, but it isn’t committed to any particular day, or that I’ll even post along this theme every week. How’s that for commitment?
