Have I sold out?

Posted on20. Aug, 2010 by Kenny.

Okay, this is a little awkward. Recently I’ve posted some ad space on this blog and I’ve gained a few advertisers. I just thought I’d throw it out there. If someone wants to buy and ad space, I’d be more than glad to sell it to you. This blog is a passion of mine and I’ve put thousands of hours into it. However, I’m not the type that thinks if you sell ads you’ve somehow “sold out.” Actually, the more money I gain in ad space, the more my wife will tolerate all the time I spend writing. Okay, I made that last part up, my wife is very supportive. :)

I’ve actually told my wife that every dollar that comes in from the ad revenue will go to our “replace one of our crappy cars” fund. At this rate, we’ll have a less crappy car in 17 years. I kid… more like 15 years.

Most ads will probably tie in to what I write about and what I believe in. Some may not, but that’s okay. It’s not pushy or in your face, just right there on the side. I’ll probably write a post every now and then thanking my advertisers and highlighting them for you. Feel free to ignore them if you want. However, I do encourage you to click on the ads and check them out. It may be a product or resource you didn’t know about that will be of great value to you. Then again, maybe it wont. If that’s the case, do it for me. I’m not sure my crappy cars can hold out for 15 more years.

iPhone 4

I was very please to get home from Colorado last night with a package waiting for me on the kitchen counter… my much awaited iPhone 4. A few weeks ago I upgraded my 3G to iPhone4 software and I’ve been regretting it as it choked my 3G. I knew there were options to go back, but I didn’t want to give up some of the new email options… so I’ve put up with the slow system until the new phone arrived. I’m really excited to play with the video options. A few weeks ago I came across this short film entirely shot and edited on the iPhone 4. Pretty impressive.

Do you need an iFriend?

I just came across this video and I just had to share. I grew up using a Mac. We always had an Apple in the house since the mid 1980’s. My first computer was a Mac (I was the only guy in my entire dorm with with a Mac), one of the reasons I switched to a PC right after college). For the last two years, I’ve been a Mac user again with my MacBook Pro and beloved iPhone. However, I’m not a kool-aid drinker. I’m probably going to get the iPhone4, but I’ve been telling everyone that it will probably be my last iPhone as the competition is getting really interesting and I anticipate having many compelling reasons to not get the 5th gen iPhone. Again, I really like Apple, but if something better comes along, I won’t think twice about switching.

Ever since I left Apple in the 90’s, I’ve always found the Apple culture funny. Apple loyalists are a close-knit tribe and at times could be pretty obnoxious. I guess if I had a product, I’d want a loyal fan base that loved the product so much they were obnoxious about it. With the iMac, iPod, iTunes and iPhone products, the tribe has grown significantly and has gotten a little less obnoxious, but the culture carries on. I think this little video from the Onion perfectly illustrates a snapshot of the Apple culture.

App of the week: Settlers of Catan on iPhone/iPad

Posted on27. Jun, 2010 by Kenny.

I’m a huge fan of the game, “The Settlers of Catan.” Over a year ago Wired Magazine wrote an article about this game called Monopoly Killer that describes how this game and others like it are redefining the board game genre. I’ve been playing Settlers for 6-8 years and I LOVE it. So, I just found out this week that there is an iPhone app where you can play multi-player or just against the computer. I don’t get to play very often, so this app is great for scratching the itch.

I’ll be honest, it’s a little hard to play on the little screen that is my iPhone. However, I think the experience would be considerably different on the iPad. So, if you have an iPad and you’d like to check out a very unique but fun game, pick up the Catan app. The board game actually costs $40, so you might want to try out the digital version first to make sure you’re going to like it.

Check out more on this iPhone app right here.

Oh, but before I leave you though, I saw another bit of Catan goodness. A version of the game has been developed for the Microsoft Surface. We first learned about the Surface 3 years ago and over the years we’ve seen videos and bits of news about it, but nothing widespread. However, playing Catan on the Surface looks unread. Check it out!

If you feel you need to trust me that this is an awesome game, then buy it right here… the real board game version.

Another post dedicated to Sam Luce

This isn’t the first time I’ve dedicated a post to my Yankee friend. However, Jonathan Cliff sent this to me a few weeks ago (not becasue he thought this was cool, but becasue he was picking on me) and I figured I should post this. Let me defend myself first.

I am not a Trekkie. I do not own any Star Trek paraphernalia, movies or costumes. Of the TV shows that have been running for literally decades, I’ve seen only a dozen or so episodes, most of them back when I was a teenager. However, I have seen all the movies, I think. There may be one in there that I missed.

However, because I do like the Sci-Fi genre and becasue I’ve I can recall a few random Star Trek facts that I’ve picked up and remembered from watching the movies, Sam Luce thinks I’m a Trekkie. Whatever. So Sam, I dedicate this post to you, perhaps it will give you more things to pick on.

However, just so everyone knows, Sam Luce too is a closet fan of Sci-Fi. He enjoyed the X-Files television series and secretly enjoys dressing up as a Wookie for Halloween.

Random (but not usless) information

Today I had an interesting request. I must say I’ve never had this request before. Written on a database change form (what we use to make changes to check-in and family information) was the note, “Can we put (..) over ‘i’ in Nyeima’s name?”

Say what?

I get it. There are lots of international transplants with interesting symbols and modifiers in their names living in our communities. Most seem to be okay with the fact that us ethno-centric Americans aren’t going to know what to do with the things we don’t recognize and not expect us to make changes for them. But why shouldn’t we? It’s their name, right? If it’s easy to do, shouldn’t we put forth just a little extra effort to honor them by typing out their name correctly. I think so.

So when I saw this note, I turned to my friend Google. I had a feeling that this was an easy fix and it was. I’m a Mac user, so this little guide helped me out. Technically it’s called an i with diaeresis. To make it, you type “Option-u i.” Literally, you’ll hold down the option key and press u, then press i alone and you get ï. Woo hoo! You’ll see all kinds of other symbols as well. Other symbols worth knowing are  ® © ™. You can find all of these symbols and more from the link above. For you windows users, I think this pdf lists the shortcuts for your keyboards.

#Orange10 Meat Up @ the Varsity

meatup

What? Yes, I wrote that right, it’s a Meat Up! It’s not an official Orange event by any means. The official Tweet Up is on Wednesday night (April 28th) at 10:00 PM. This is just a little get together the night before.

Last year we held the first Tweet Up at the Varsity on Tuesday, the night before everything started. I can’t tell you how helpful it was to get to know some people, put names to faces and hang out a little before the business of Orange. That way when I saw people in the halls walking around, I already knew them. I also love the Varsity. Anytime I’m in Atlanta, I go at least one time. Their Onion Rings are incredible. Whether you like hot dogs or hamburgers, the Varsity won’t do you wrong! It’s a city landmark and I wouldn’t miss it.

So, if you’re in Atlanta on Tuesday night, April 27th, feel free to join me at the Varsity for a little Meat Up action. I’ll be there with people like Jonathan Cliff, Sam Luce, Gina McClain, Matt McKee and others. You don’t have to be a blogger or on twitter. Just someone who wants to hang out with other kidmin and stumin leaders. We’ll probably arrive a little before 9:00 PM and hang out for a few hours. Hope to see you there!

BTW, there’s more than one varsity. We’ll be at the one in down town ATL, the original:
61 North Ave Northwest
Atlanta, GA 30308-2166

24842_10150163402775548_127108530547_11740790_1530534_nDo you ever get tired of reading ministry blog after ministry blog after ministry blog? Do you need a “blog vacation?” I thought you might.

Let me introduce to you my favorite, non-ministry blog. It’s called Dixie Gypsy and it’s written by my beautiful wife. When I was 18 I made a list of the things I wanted in a wife (yeah, I was that kind of guy). I’ll share a secret with you. One of the items on the list was that she would be a Southern girl. Hey, what can I say? If you’re from the South, you know what I’m talking about. :)

So, my little Southern Belle is writing her own blog. Actually, she started the blog almost two years ago but got busy with other stuff. She’s back at it again, writing about food, trips we’ve taken and raising a little giant. She’s such a gifted writer and has such an amazing way with words. I think you’ll really enjoy reading her blog, but I’m partial.

So, click here to visit the Dixie Gypsy.
