New Kids Quest t-shirt design

I’ll admit. I’m the wort at designing t-shirts. I’ve designed many over the years. I like to think I can design a sharp post card or banner, but give me a t-shirt and I lose all confidence. I know what I like, I just can’t make it.

Last fall I had a graphic designer create our new volunteer t-shirt. It’s one of my favorites. It was so good, Jim Wideman “borrowed” the design for his volunteer shirts. I took that as a huge compliment.

So we had this idea to design some Kids Quest t-shirts for the kids. I’ve spent the last 2-3 weeks thinking about them. Finally last night after I spent an hour playing with some design ideas, I asked a graphic designer to take a crack at it. This afternoon she sent me this.

I was in love. On the first try she really captured the essence of what I wanted. It needed just a little tweaking. “Kids Quest” didn’t stand out enough. I made some suggestions and next came this:

A little better, but not quite it. Having the bright white made it come across a little too childish. The designer decided to give it another shot. She went back to the original design and just widened the space between the text and the background. Bingo, that was it! We had a winner. Our final design is…. not yet. You’ll have to wait until after lunch.

Since arriving at Gateway, I’ve wanted to give the Children’s Ministry an image. Don’t get me wrong, we have a great building with excellent environments. However, the ministry lacks a real image. The closest thing to a logo is a low resolution image of a boat, something we probably won’t be sticking with. We’re still a little way off from developing a brand, but we needed something now.

So for Christmas we decided to give all of our volunteers a new Kid’s Quest T-Shirt. It was our thank you gift for all of our volunteers as well as an opportunity to get Kid’s Quest out there. We’re still planning to build our brand later in 2009, but this is a fresh new look we can use in the meantime that is fun, fresh and not embarrassing for our volunteers to wear (you know what I mean?).
